The build-up to the 2026 World Cup is already underway in South America, with the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying campaign kicking off. Home of legendary players such as Lionel Messi, Diego Maradona and Pele, South America is renowned as a place that produces some of the most accomplished footballers in the world.

South American World Cup qualification involves 10 teams and each team plays the other teams twice, meaning there are 18 matchdays.
The top six teams qualify for the World Cup and the team which finishes in seventh place advances to the inter-confederation play-offs.
South American World Cup qualifying cycles last a number of years. Matchday one begins on September 7, 2023, with the final matchday scheduled for September 2025.

Where is the 2026 World Cup being hosted?
The United States, Canada and Mexico will jointly host the 2026 World Cup, meaning it will be the first tournament since the 2002 edition where hosting duties are shared across multiple countries.
FIFA confirmed that the “United Bid”, as it was styled, had defeated the rival bid from Morocco in 2018.
It will be the third time that Mexico has hosted a World Cup and the second time that the U.S. has done so. For Canada, it will be the first time the men’s World Cup has taken place in the country.
This World Cup tournament will be the first which involves 48 teams, which is an increase of 16 teams.
When does the 2026 World Cup start?
The 2026 World Cup is scheduled to begin in June 2026 and it will run for a month until mid-July 2026.
Dates have not yet been finalised, but the June-July schedule sees the tournament reverted to a summer calendar following the winter World Cup in Qatar in 2022.
