Ramaphosa to address the nation on BRICS summit and Lady R probe

President Cyril Ramaphosa will address the nation this evening, providing insights into the outcomes of the 15th BRICS Summit as well as conclusions from the panel’s investigation into the docking of the Lady R vessel in South Africa.

The address is scheduled for 8pm and will be live-streamed on various platforms.

reports that, originally, President Ramaphosa was scheduled to address the nation last Thursday, but the plan was cancelled due to a devastating fire that engulfed a building in Marshalltown, Johannesburg, resulting in the loss of over 70 lives.

The President visited Marshalltown to gain knowledge of the emergency and recovery operations while also assessing the government’s support for affected families.

This evening’s address will focus in part on the outcomes of the 15th BRICS Summit, which South Africa hosted in Sandton from 22 to 24 August. This annual gathering brings together the BRICS countries: Brazil, the Russian Federation, India, China and South Africa.

Discussions revolve around areas of political and socio-economic coordination, identifying business opportunities, exploring economic complementarities and fostering areas of cooperation.

President Ramaphosa will also update the nation on the findings of the judicial commission of inquiry into the Russian cargo vessel, Lady R.

The panel, chaired by retired judge Phineas Mojapelo with the assistance of Advocate Leah Gcabashe SC and former cabinet minister Enver Surty, completed its investigations on 18 July.
