Capetonian to tackle 1000 km Munga MTB race for a worthy cause

With hopes of raising in excess of R100 000 for the Cape of Good Hope SPCA, a Cape Town resident will be tackling one of the most gruelling mountain bike events on the planet, the Munga, later this year.

In 2022, Tienie Maree embarked on a remarkable journey, one that would test not only his physical endurance but also his determination to make a difference in the lives of animals.

He made a significant decision to purchase an entry for the Munga MTB race, fully aware that this challenge would be among the most demanding experiences of his life.

However, Tienie had a purpose beyond personal achievement. He wanted his efforts to count for something more.

The Munga, a gruelling 1 000km semi-supported race, has seen 14 riders raise over R400 000 on GivenGain since 2015 for 13 different charities, with donors from 16 countries and participants from 4 countries, including the USA, Belgium, England, and South Africa.

While completing the world’s toughest race was undoubtedly a personal triumph, Tienie’s most significant achievement lay in the remarkable generosity of like-minded individuals who rallied behind his cause. Together, they managed to raise an astounding amount, over R51 000, which directly contributed to the mission of finding loving homes for more than 600 animals.

Tienie’s campaign garnered substantial attention through social media, generating invaluable publicity for Munga 4 Mutts.

Throughout his arduous journey, he felt profoundly humbled by the multitude of people who followed his progress, both on social media and the race’s tracking page.

Despite the immense challenges posed by the Munga 2022 race, Tienie found it to be a profoundly rewarding experience.

This satisfaction and his unwavering commitment to his cause have led him to return for the Munga MTB event scheduled from 29 November to 4 December 2023.
