Volksrust, Mpumalanga – In a significant development in the fight against corruption, a 42-year-old Nigerian national, Benjamin Ezeokwuosa, was sentenced to 10 years in jail by the Volksrust Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday. Ezeokwuosa’s conviction stemmed from his attempt to bribe a Hawks officer in a bid to secure the release of his brother, who had been arrested on drug-related charges.
The incident unfolded on May 8, 2022, when Benjamin Ezeokwuosa, accompanied by an accomplice, Nwaebiem Uchenna Uzuegbnam, approached a Hawks investigator outside the Volksrust Magistrate’s Court. The duo made a brazen offer of R5,000 to the investigator with the intention of securing Ezeokwuosa’s brother’s release from custody.
However, unbeknownst to Ezeokwuosa and Uzuegbnam, the Hawks investigator was well-prepared, having set up a sting operation. Pretending to accept the illicit bribe, the investigator promptly arrested both individuals on charges of corruption.
In a surprising turn of events, Benjamin Ezeokwuosa pleaded guilty to the charges brought against him. Subsequently, he received a 10-year prison sentence. The case of Nwaebiem Uchenna Uzuegbnam was adjourned until September 7, when it will proceed to trial.
This verdict sends a clear message that the South African law enforcement agencies are committed to upholding the rule of law and eradicating corruption at all levels. Speaking on the matter, Captain Dineo Lucy Sekgotodi, the spokesperson for the Hawks, stated, “The Hawks will continue to work tirelessly to root out corruption and bring those who engage in it to book.”

As the nation grapples with the consequences of corruption, the sentencing of Benjamin Ezeokwuosa serves as a stark reminder that justice will be served, and those engaging in corrupt practices will face the full force of the law.
