Walking past defenders - Aaron Lennon says £50m Chelsea player has been on absolute fire this season

Former Tottenham Hotspur player Aaron Lennon thinks Chelsea winger Raheem Sterling has been on fire this season.

Aaron Lennon was discussing Raheem Sterling on Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube channel FIVE following Gareth Southgate’s decision to leave him out of England’s latest squad.

It was not a decision that Liverpool legend Graeme Souness agreed with.

The Three Lions could have probably done with a forward of the Chelsea man’s calibre last night after they failed to beat North Macedonia.

Raheem Sterling on fire

It is fair to say that Lennon, who knows all about playing as a winger, has liked what he has seen from Sterling this season.

Speaking about the 28-year-old on FIVE, he said: “He’s on fire this season. He said he had an injury last season and he wasn’t really at his best and stuff, but this season he’s come out firing.

“He’s walking past defenders again. He’s creating chances, scoring goals.”

Sterling’s dribbling really has been excellent this term and the stats back it up.

For example, according to WhoScored, the £50m (BBC Sport) England international made four dribbles in Chelsea’s incredible 4-4 draw with Manchester City. Only Phil Foden made more on the day. It was a match where Kyle Walker could just not live with him.

Most importantly, though, Sterling’s end product is starting to improve. He scored in that game against his former side and has netted four times in total in the Premier League this season. Last term, he only managed to register six goals.

For whatever reason, Southgate still seems unconvinced, but it has been his loss and Mauricio Pochettino‘s gain.

The Argentine has not had to worry about potentially losing Sterling to injury during this international break and will have him available for the trip to Newcastle on Saturday.

Sterling will not be too happy with his recent exile from the England set-up. But if he keeps playing the way he has been this season, then there is no way that Southgate can leave him out of his squad for Euro 2024.
